The North End of Paisley stretches from the town centre to Glasgow Airport between the River Cart and the St James’s industrial estates. It is a vibrant community but one struggling with serious deprivation, designated a Regeneration Outcome Area in the most deprived 10% in Scotland (Scottish Index Multiple Deprivation 2006). This deprivation is manifest in high levels of poverty, anti-social behaviour, isolation, family fragmentation, and unemployment. Young people and adults frequently show very low self-esteem and expectations in life. Levels of income deprivation are three times the national average as is the percentage of working age people not in employment. Presently many people in our community are disconnected, diminished and resigned to nothing changing. We strive for a future where people value themselves and others, active in fulfilling relationships in a more connected and resilient community. |
